Melanociti su ćelije koje proizvode melanin, a koje su izvedene iz nervnog grebena.[1] Nalaze se u donjem sloju (stratum basale) kožne epiderme, srednjem sloju oka (u uvea),[2] unutrašnjem uhu,[3] meningama (moždanim ovojnicama),[4] kostima,[5] i srcu.[6] Melanin je pigment koji prvenstveno odgovoran za boju kože i boju očiju. Jednom sintetiziran, melanin se nalazi u posebnim organelama zvanim melanosomi i pružaju duž granate strukture – dendrita tako da dosegne do keratocita.
