The People's Liberation Army Ground Force[a] (PLAGF), also referred to as the PLA Army,[3] serves as the land-based component of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and is the PLA's largest and oldest branch. Its roots trace back to 1927, during the founding of the Chinese Red Army, which played a critical role in the Chinese Civil War and later formed the backbone of what became the PLA. However, it wasn't formally established as the Ground Force until 1948, reflecting the transition from a revolutionary force to an organized state military. The PLAGF has since grown and evolved significantly, maintaining a crucial role in China's defense strategy and military structure.
