Template talk:Yogyakarta royal family

Notice:

I added

to this article because there have been repeated attempts to inflate the titles of members of the Yogyakarta Royal Family and or to render their titles to misleading and ridiculous-sounding English titles. Please follow Thai and Malaysian examples, USE indigenous titles if you must. AnakPejuangIndonesia (talk)

Note:

  • For the Sultan, the traditional style 'Highness' should be used instead of 'Majesty'. 'Majesty' should only be used for the monarchs of independent countries. In Malaysia, 'Majesty' is used only for the Yang Dipertuan Agong. Monarchs of the Malaysian states are styled 'Highness' in the colonial era, and are now styled 'Royal Highness'. The Princes of the 'Vorstenlanden', or the Javanese princely states, have traditionally been styled 'Highness' in English. This reflects that none of them is the sovereign of an independent country as their territory is part of the Indonesian Republic.
  • Foreign titles such as 'Lord' and 'Lady' should not be used for junior family members. Native titles are normally used when writing in English. Most of the titled Malaysians and Thais are referred to not as 'Lord' or 'Lady', but by their native titles. It's anachronistic and ahistorical to use 'Lord' or 'Lady' for non-English titled individuals. In the same vein, I recommended a move from 'Queen Hemas' to 'Ratu Hemas', which was supported by most Wikipedia editors.

I have recently reverted some edits by Saassoee, which added the style 'Majesty' to Sultan HB X and Ratu Hemas without any proper discussion. I have therefore added references to official Indonesian and Australian government publications in English, refering to the Sultan of Yogyakarta as a 'Highness', not a 'Majesty'. I'd be grateful if future editors refrain from making random and unsourced edits without consulting the wikipedia community.
