The World Fantasy Award—Short Fiction is given each year for fantasy short stories published in English. The World Fantasy Awards are given each year by the World Fantasy Convention for the best fantasy fiction published in English during the previous calendar year. A work of fiction is defined by the organization as short fiction if it is 10,000 words or less in length. During the 49 years, 182 authors have had works nominated; 50 of them have won, including ties and co-authors. Only five authors have won more than once: Ramsey Campbell (pictured) and James Blaylock have two wins out of four nominations each, Stephen King won twice out of three nominations, and Tanith Lee and Fred Chappell won both times they were each nominated. Of the authors who have won at least once, Jeffrey Ford and Kelly Link have the most nominations, with five each, followed by Dennis Etchison and Avram Davidson, who along with Campbell and Blaylock received four nominations. Charles de Lint has the most nominations without winning, at five; he is followed by Michael Swanwick, who has had four nominations without winning. The Batman, a 2022 American superhero film based on the DC Comics character Batman, won eleven awards from eighty-seven nominations, with particular recognition for its acting, make-up, musical score, production design, and visual effects. It received three nominations at the 95th Academy Awards, including Best Visual Effects. At the 76th British Academy Film Awards, the film was nominated for Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Makeup and Hair, and Best Special Visual Effects. It received three nominations at the 28th Critics' Choice Awards. Composer Michael Giacchino (pictured) received a nomination for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media at the Grammy Awards' 65th ceremony. American actor Oscar Isaac has appeared in many roles on screen and stage and received several accolades. He made his debut with a minor role in the film Illtown (1998), and his first major role was in the biblical drama film The Nativity Story (2006). After playing minor roles in several films for much of the rest of the 2000s, Isaac received recognition for the musical drama Inside Llewyn Davis (2013). In 2015, he portrayed the reclusive inventor of a gynoid in the science fiction film Ex Machina, and played his first leading role on television – the miniseries Show Me a Hero. Isaac's role in the latter garnered him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film. He became a superstar after playing Poe Dameron in the Star Wars sequel trilogy (2015–2019) and Star Wars Resistance (2018–2020). In 2022, Isaac joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe by playing the titular superheroes in the miniseries Moon Knight, for which he was nominated for a MTV Movie Award for Best Hero. (Full list...)

The 76th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), honored films released in 2003 and took place on February 29, 2004, at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles. During the ceremony, AMPAS presented Academy Awards in 24 categories. The ceremony, televised in the United States by ABC, was produced by Joe Roth and directed by Louis J. Horvitz. Actor Billy Crystal hosted the show for the eighth time. He first hosted the 62nd ceremony held in 1990, and had last hosted the 72nd ceremony in 2000. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King won a record-tying eleven awards including Best Picture and Best Director for Peter Jackson (pictured). The Philippine television newscast 24 Oras has won thirty-two awards from ninety-three nominations. It premiered on GMA Network on March 15, 2004, and focuses on reportage of present-day events, incorporating disparate segments that appear recurringly. The newscast initially featured Mel Tiangco and Mike Enriquez; the newscast's anchors have changed significantly during its run. It has won five Box Office Entertainment Awards for Most Popular TV Program News & Public Affairs. The newscast has received eight Asian Academy Creative Award nominations (winning one) and fifty-two PMPC Star Awards for Television nominations (winning nine). At the 2009 New York Festivals TV & Film Awards, 24 Oras garnered a Gold World Medal and a Silver World Medal. 1952 in spaceflight featured several branches of the United States' military, often in partnership with civilian organizations, continuing their programs of sounding rocket research beyond the 100-kilometre (62-mile) boundary of space (as defined by the World Air Sports Federation) using the Aerobee rocket. The University of Iowa launched its first series of rockoon flights, demonstrating the validity of the balloon-launched rocket, a comparatively inexpensive way to explore the upper atmosphere. The launch of Viking 9 (pictured) at the end of the year to an altitude of 135 miles (217 kilometres), by the Naval Research Laboratory team under the management of Milton Rosen, represented the pinnacle of contemporary operational rocket design. The same year, groundwork was laid for the launch of the first artificial satellite when, in October, the General Assembly of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU) scheduled the International Geophysical Year for 1957–58. From 1970 to 2023, 279 players have been selected by the Portland Trail Blazers, an American professional basketball team in the National Basketball Association (NBA) based in Portland, Oregon. The franchise was founded in the 1970–71 NBA season and made their first draft pick in the 1970 NBA draft. Portland has held the first overall pick four times, selecting LaRue Martin in 1972, Bill Walton in 1974, Mychal Thompson in 1978, and Greg Oden in 2007. Three players drafted by Portland won the Rookie of the Year Award; Geoff Petrie (pictured), who was the franchise's inaugural draft pick, won in 1971, Sidney Wicks in 1972, and Damian Lillard in 2013. Four drafted players have been elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame: Walton, Dražen Petrović, Clyde Drexler, and Arvydas Sabonis, while nine have had their jersey number retired by the team. Walton and Drexler were named to the NBA 50th and 75th anniversary teams in 1996 and 2021, respectively, while Lillard was named to the 75th anniversary team. (Full list...)

Ellen White, an English professional footballer, scored 52 goals in 113 appearances for England between 2010 and 2022, making her the country's all-time top scorer. She also played for the Great Britain women's Olympic football team at the 2012 and 2020 Summer Olympics, scoring six goals in eight appearances. White made her England debut on 25 March 2010 against Austria at Loftus Road during a 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup qualification match; she also scored her first international goal during the match, the third goal in the 3–0 win. She scored her first international hat-trick in a friendly against Northern Ireland on 23 February 2021, and she scored her second for Great Britain against Australia during the 2020 Summer Olympics. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored 30 international goals since 2009 as a forward for the Gabon national football team, making him the country's all-time top scorer. Born in France to Pierre Aubameyang, a former Gabon international, he has played 75 games for the national team as of 2024. Aubameyang scored on his international debut against Morocco on 28 March 2009, helping Gabon win 2–1. He scored his first and only international hat-trick against Niger in 2013 during a FIFA World Cup qualifier. Aubameyang's most recent goal for Gabon was against Mauritania in a 1–1 friendly draw on 4 January 2022. Aubameyang has been haunted by various controversies concerning his involvement with the national team, promoting criticism and a media boycott. Nonetheless, the forward remains a valuable asset to the team and has been described as "the greatest player in Gabon" by the team's current head coach, Patrice Neveu. (Full list...)
