Since Wikimedia Commons is now the repository for free images, it is redundant and wasteful to upload an image to every Wikipedia language or sister project that wants to use an image. Using Commons, we can store a picture just once on Wikimedia's servers and use it anywhere. Therefore, uploaded free images should all be transferred to Commons, and those that are currently on Wikipedia should be moved. As all of the subcategories of Category:All free media, including Category:GFDL files, Category:Public domain files and many others, should now be transferred to Commons, this WikiProject has been created to organize efforts and expand awareness of this massive waste of server space. Please apply an extremely critical eye to allegedly "free" images here before uploading them at the Commons. This project is a good chance to catch many of the dodgily sourced and licensed images here. If you have any doubts please don't upload to the Commons, and send to FfD or PUF. Otherwise, you are creating a mess which Commons admins will have to mop up later. |
