This is an essay on style. It contains the advice or opinions of one or more WikiProjects on how to format and present article content within their area of interest. This information is not a formal Wikipedia policy or guideline, as it has not been thoroughly vetted by the community.

Spaceflight article naming in a nutshell: Do not use disambiguation unless it is necessary. Use "(satellite)" as a disambiguator for uncrewed spacecraft operating independently in geocentric orbit. Use "(spacecraft)" as a disambiguator for other spacecraft. Use "(rocket)" as a disambiguator for rockets. Use "(rocket family)" as a disambiguator for groups of rockets. Use "(missile)" as a disambiguator for missiles, unless the missile's systemic designation can be used to prefix its common name. Where possible, use flight/serial numbers for launch articles, otherwise use a descriptive title of the form "[month] [rocket] launch failure". Manufacturers' names in article titles are often preferred over the above-mentioned disambiguators. Use the most recent name or designation. Do not use alternative names as disambiguators.

In many cases the absence of specific guidelines for spaceflight articles have led to inconsistency in the naming of articles within this project's scope.
