Pandemik COVID-19 telah memberikan kesan yang ketara terhadap industri penerbangan akibat pelaksanaan sekatan perjalanan dan penurunan jumlah penumpang. Penurunan jumlah penumpang akibat pada pembatalan penerbangan sehingga banyak syarikat penerbangan terpaksa melakukan PHK besar-besaran atau bahkan muflis. Beberapa syarikat penerbangan lain tidak mengembalikan dana tiket yang dibatalkan untuk mengurangkan kerugian. Pengeluar pesawat terbang dan pengendali lapangan terbang juga dilaporkan melakukan PHK terhadap para pegawainya.

Krisis dunia penerbangan semasa pandemik COVID-19 dianggap sebagai krisis paling dahsyat dalam sejarah penerbangan menurut CEO Airbus SE, Guillaume Faury,[1] CEO EasyJet, Johan Lundgren,[2] orang kuat United Airlines, Oscar Munoz,[3] CEO Qantas, Alan Joyce,[4] dan beberapa media, seperti Financial Times,[5] The New York Times,[6] dan The Independent.[7]
