Het woord literatuur heeft verschillende, dicht bij elkaar liggende betekenissen. De ruimste is dat literatuur de verzameling van alle teksten is, geschreven en in mondelinge vorm. Literatuur wordt ook in een enge betekenis gebruikt, waarbij zij tegenover lectuur is gesteld. In die zin zou literatuur de hoge, artistieke vorm en lectuur de lage, populairdere vorm van teksten aanduiden.
Gedichten en poëzie , toneel - en filmteksten , prozateksten die geheel of gedeeltelijk zijn verzonnen (fictie , bijvoorbeeld de roman ) en proza dat waargebeurde verschijnselen en personen beschrijft (non-fictie , onder meer de brief , het essay en de autobiografie ) kunnen literaire kenmerken bezitten. De definitie van die kenmerken is geen eenvoudige zaak. Veelal zijn meerduidigheid (poly-interpretabiliteit), originaliteit en complexiteit centrale criteria, alsook de betrokkenheid van de lezer bij het herscheppen van de tekst. Waterdichte instrumenten om te bepalen wat literatuur is, levert dat niet op.

Charles Dickens Charles John Huffham Dickens (Landport bij Portsmouth , 7 februari 1812 – Gad's Hill Place in Rochester (Kent ), 9 juni 1870 ) was een van de belangrijkste Britse schrijvers van het victoriaanse tijdperk .
Dickens werd geboren als zoon van John Dickens en Elizabeth Barrow. Toen hij tien was, verhuisde de familie naar Londen . Door financiële moeilijkheden van zijn vader (hij werd wegens schulden in de gevangenis gezet) moest de jonge Charles enkele malen zijn school verlaten om te gaan werken. Zo belandde hij op twaalfjarige leeftijd in een schoensmeerfabriek waar hij tien uur per dag moest werken. De omstandigheden waaronder arbeiders moesten leven werden een belangrijk onderwerp in zijn latere werk.
Toen hij 15 was, kwam hij te werken op een advocatenkantoor. Hij leerde zichzelf stenografie en werd na enige tijd politiek verslaggever voor de Morning Chronicle (1835). In die tijd ontstond uit zijn journalistieke werk zijn eerste literaire werk in de vorm van beschrijvingen van het Londense leven en het buitenleven. Deze werden later gebundeld onder de titel Sketches by Boz (1836-1837). 'Boz' was de bijnaam van zijn jongere broer Moses, die altijd verkouden was.
Veel van zijn werken verschenen in eerste instantie in de vorm van feuilletons in diverse bladen en werden pas later als boek uitgegeven. Enkele van zijn werken werden op deze manier gepubliceerd in het blad Household Words dat hij redigeerde en in de opvolger daarvan, All the Year Round .

Simon Legree bedreigt Oom Tom
De Negerhut van Oom Tom is een in 1852 uitgebracht boek (eerst in serievorm uitgegeven tussen 1851 en 1852 ) van de Amerikaanse schrijfster Harriet Beecher Stowe . In de Verenigde Staten uitgegeven onder de naam Uncle Tom's Cabin , verhaalt het boek over de lotgevallen van een aantal slaven in en om een plantage in de Amerikaanse staat Kentucky . Onder hen zijn de slavin Eliza en haar onofficiële echtgenoot George en vooral Oom Tom, een trouwe en jarenlange slaaf van de eigenaar van de plantage waar hij woont.
Geïnspireerd op de lotgevallen van de prediker Reverend Josiah Henson bij zijn werk voor de Underground Railroad was Uncle Tom's Cabin de eerste, grote poging om het brede publiek in de Verenigde Staten en elders te wijzen op de immorele en mensonterende praktijken van de slavernij en slavenhandel in de Verenigde Staten. Het boek werd een internationale bestseller , een standaardwerk van de abolitionistische beweging en vervloekt en verketterd door de slavenhoudende staten in het Zuiden van de Verenigde Staten.
Het boek is een van de eerste voorbeelden van een campagne op grote schaal door middel van een massacommunicatiemedium (de drukpers ) door een belangengroepering in de moderne geschiedenis.(lees verder )
