Het woord literatuur heeft verschillende, dicht bij elkaar liggende betekenissen. De ruimste is dat literatuur de verzameling van alle teksten is, geschreven en in mondelinge vorm. Literatuur wordt ook in een enge betekenis gebruikt, waarbij zij tegenover lectuur is gesteld. In die zin zou literatuur de hoge, artistieke vorm en lectuur de lage, populairdere vorm van teksten aanduiden.
Gedichten en poëzie , toneel - en filmteksten , prozateksten die geheel of gedeeltelijk zijn verzonnen (fictie , bijvoorbeeld de roman ) en proza dat waargebeurde verschijnselen en personen beschrijft (non-fictie , onder meer de brief , het essay en de autobiografie ) kunnen literaire kenmerken bezitten. De definitie van die kenmerken is geen eenvoudige zaak. Veelal zijn meerduidigheid (poly-interpretabiliteit), originaliteit en complexiteit centrale criteria, alsook de betrokkenheid van de lezer bij het herscheppen van de tekst. Waterdichte instrumenten om te bepalen wat literatuur is, levert dat niet op.

William Congreve (Bardsey , 24 januari 1670 – Londen , 19 januari 1729 ) was een Engels toneelschrijver uit de late Restoration (de periode tussen 1660 en 1700, na het herstel van het koningschap onder Karel II ). Hij is vooral bekend als een dichter van de comedy of manners .
Congreves vader, een luitenant, was in Ierland gestationeerd, en de jonge Congreve ging in Kilkenny naar school; in 1686 ging hij aan Trinity College in Dublin klassieke filologie studeren. Door de nakende Glorious Revolution moest hij in 1688 naar Engeland uitwijken, waarna hij naar Londen verhuisde. In 1691 studeerde hij er recht.
Kort daarop begon hij toneelwerken te schrijven, na in 1692 het prozawerkje Incognita te hebben gepubliceerd. Hij was bevriend geraakt met John Dryden , die hem onder zijn hoede nam en in wiens vertaling van Juvenalis hij een satire voor zijn rekening nam. Naar eigen zeggen had Congreve reeds in 1690 zijn komedie The Old Bachelor geschreven; met de steun van Dryden werd het werk in 1693 opgevoerd, hetgeen zijn doorbraak betekende — desalniettemin, en in weerwil van de steun van Dryden, werd zijn daaropvolgende komedie, The Double Dealer , georiënteerd naar Molière en Fletcher , slechts lauw onthaald. Congreve moet, zoals uit de opdracht blijkt, enigszins verbolgen zijn geweest; de geraffineerde intriges die voor zijn stukken zo typerend zijn, werden door een publiek dat platvoerse farce gewend was niet steeds enthousiast ontvangen.

Stupeur et tremblements (Met angst en beven) is een in 1999 gepubliceerde autobiografische roman van de Franstalige Belgische schrijfster Amélie Nothomb . Het is haar negende roman en de zevende die uitgegeven werd door Éditions Albin Michel . Hij werd in 1999 bekroond met de Grand Prix du roman de l'Académie française , ex-æquo met Anielka van François Taillandier. Een Nederlandse vertaling getiteld Met angst en beven werd in 2002 uitgegeven door De Bezige Bij .
Deze roman beschrijft het Japanse systeem van werkverhoudingen in grote firma's waarin niet alleen van werknemers perfectie wordt geëist, maar waarin ook wrede behandelingen als uitsluiting en belediging geduld worden. Soms worden die straffen, zoals bij Amélie het geval was, ingezet om iemand weg te pesten zonder hem zelf te moeten ontslaan. De titel Stupeur et tremblements verwijst naar een Japans protocol dat wordt opgelegd waarbij respect voor de aanwezigheid van de keizer met 'vrees en beven' moet worden getoond door zijn onderdanen. Moderne Japanners houden zich niet zo strikt meer aan dit voorschrift, maar tot 1947 werd de keizer nog als een levende god beschouwd. Met deze roman schreef Amélie Nothomb een haast Kafkaiaanse satire van het moderne despotisme binnen de bedrijfscultuur. (lees verder )
