Grateful Dead var eit amerikansk rockeband skipa i San Francisco Bay Area i 1965.[1] Bandet var kjend for den unike og breitt samansette stilen sin, som blanda element frå rock, folk, bluegrass, blues, reggae, country, jazz, psykedelia og space rock[2][3]—og for konsertane sine med lange improvisasjonar.[1][4] «Musikken deira», skriv Lenny Kaye, «rører område som dei fleste andre grupper ikkje ein gong veit eksisterer.»[5]
Tilhengjarar av Grateful Dead, nokre av dei har følgd bandet frå konsert til konsert i årevis, vert kalla «Deadheads», og er kjend for den store entusiasmen sin for bandet.[1][4] Mange kallar berre bandet for «the Dead».
Musikken til Grateful Dead er påverka frå mange hald. På konsertinnspelingar eller på platene deira kan ein høyre psykedelisk rock, blues, rock and roll, country, bluegrass, countryrock og improvisert jazz. Desse forskjellige inspirasjonskjeldene vart utskild til ein mangfaldig og psykedelisk heilskap som gjorde «Grateful til pionerane i jamband-verda»[6] Dei vart rangert på 55. plass på lista til Rolling Stone over dei største artistane gjennom tidene.[7]
