The United States Office of Management and Budget calls the area the "Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area". It is also unofficially known as Metro Atlanta. The Atlanta metropolitan area includes 29 counties in north Georgia. The US Census Bureau estimated that 6,307,261 people lived in the Atlanta metropolitan area in 2023.[2] The City of Atlanta, however, is only the 38th largest in the U.S., with an population of 498,715 in the 2020 Census.[4]
